New Found Confidence!

New Found Confidence!

Venkatesh Krishnamoorthy | Srikanth's Stallions Team A | Winner - State Street Overcoming the Odds Award Bengaluru 2018

I am a Urologist by profession, and am over 60 years of age. My workday starts in the morning and finishes at night, everyday without respite. I do my own bit of physical fitness on a daily basis, only so I have the moral courage, to advise my patients on the importance of physical fitness!

It was sometime in March 2017, I saw Mr Srikanth, a neighbourhood friend of mine walking in the park. His walk was very brisk, equal to other people’s running. I got into a conversation with him about his walk, one thing led to another, and he invited me to join him on various walks/runs. I pleaded inability, as I had several other professional commitments, through the year.

Coming to know that these would be completed by the end of January 2018, he insisted I join him for the Oxfam Trailwalker in the first week of February. I agreed without comprehending the task that lay ahead of me.

In August 2017, I met with a fairly major motorcycle accident, on the highway, that knocked me unconscious. I had multiple rib fractures, fluid in the lungs, a collar-bone fracture and muscle injuries. I was hospitalized and operated on. It took me a good three and a half months, before I could go for a walk of even 3 to 4 kilometers.

Just as I started increasing my distance in November 2017. I came down with a bad lung infection, that set me back by another 3 to 4 weeks. I however, went for 2 to 3 walks with Mr Srikanth, and presumed, I was now prepared for this walk. Boldly I registered along with the rest of the team! My situation fulfilled completely the adage ‘fools rush in where angels fear to tread’.

On the fateful day, I however started walking with no preconceived goals; no thoughts about my ability; no thoughts that most of the team was about half my age or a just little more than that; and of course, no idea of the enormity of the task ahead.

Thankfully I completed the walk, with no casualty, no blisters on my feet, and no need for prolonged rest later! Did I have some aches and pains? – yes! But I was most happy that I had not let down my team leader!!

Will I do the Oxfam again?
Certainly yes, if more mishaps do not befall me in the coming year

Has it been enjoyable?

How has it benefited me!
I have a new found confidence, especially since I am over 60 and the opinion in the family was that a slow madness is setting over me.

I had done a nothing of this sort in the past. But I guess I proved a point. Oxfam creates the magic to achieve the seemingly impossible!!!
